Project Goals

The aim of Innovative Thinking was that as a direct outcome the participating communities would establish broad commitments between stakeholders in each community respectively, including utilities, buildings owners, industries, transport companies, the municipal/district council and NGOs, as well as having these commitments politically accepted in the communities. This was to be done through action plans and strategies including concrete actions to increase the share of renewable, increase the energy efficiency in buildings and industrial processes, also including the transport sector.

The project also aimed to establish tools for other communities to use in their process of achieving long term commitments with a broad spectrum of stake holders, included in good examples and lessons learned as well as tools for establishing energy balances in their communities.

The deliverables of the project were concrete outcomes leading to the overarching goal of the communities' commitments mentioned above:

  • Community status reports - overview of present energy situation and key barriers for sustainable development regarding energy, that can be used as building blocks for innovation strategies and awareness raising;
  • Community strategies for the transition towards a sustainable energy community;
  • Community action plans - concrete actions to overcome the barriers for energy efficiency and renewable energy project implementation;
  • European conference on local community processes towards sustainable energy and energy saving in transport, housing and industry;
  • Booklet on Good Examples in all phases of the process;
  • Guideline for Community processes towards sustainable energy and energy saving in transport, housing and industry ("lessons learned").
